Yesterday? Doesn&#8217;t really matter; you had a reason that made you take a look.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>That reason might be that you\u2019re looking for something, like what\u2019s causing a drop in conversions, to see how people react to your new website design, how far are they scrolling and where they are clicking exactly.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>But, I actually want to tackle another big question that you might not have thought about deeply before.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>When are heatmaps most useful?\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Such an open-ended question right? But I intend to give you a satsifying answer \u2013 all you have to do is continue reading this article.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Before I dive into it I just want to give a brief introduction about heatmaps.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_heatmaps\"><\/span>What are heatmaps?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Heatmaps are a graphical presentation of people\u2019s interaction with your website presented in the form of a map.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>A map that changes colors based on if people are taking action on it or not.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>With different maps, actions performed by the user differ greatly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>I\u2019ll give you an example, heatmaps are usually divided into 3 main types.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1956 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.figpii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Heatmaps.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"770\" height=\"515\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.figpii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Heatmaps.png 770w, https:\/\/www.figpii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Heatmaps-300x201.png 300w, https:\/\/www.figpii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Heatmaps-768x514.png 768w, https:\/\/www.figpii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Heatmaps-270x180.png 270w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Click maps, Scroll maps, and Mouse movement maps \u2018eye-tracking maps\u2019<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>With each type of these maps, the action tracked is rather different.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Take for example the click maps, they track where your customer clicks on your website.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Like if they have a slider that shows the photos of your customers and you see clicks on the arrows then you know people are interested in seeing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.figpii.com\/blog\/why-is-social-proof-important\">social proof<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>They want to know who you\u2019ve worked with before so they can be more confident in working with you.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Maybe you have a CTA button at the top of your page that people miss most of the time because its color is close to the background.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>There\u2019re endless uses of click maps by business owners, marketers, and UX designers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>And if we look at scroll maps for example.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The action that this heatmap track is actually scrolling.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>It tells you how far scrolled down your page, be it a product page or a blog.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>If you\u2019re debating whether long-form content is dead or not, scroll maps are the way to answer such a question.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>And lastly, we\u2019ll talk about mouse movement maps, which can sometimes be called eye-tracking maps.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>They\u2019re called that because when people usually browse or read content they usually do it by hovering the mouse over the content and moving the mouse pointer as they moved their eyes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>And you can see easily how people interact with different types of messages on your website by looking at mouse movements patterns.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_should_you_use_heatmaps\"><\/span>Why should you use heatmaps?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>If conversions are something that you care about, then you should have heatmaps running on your website.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The next section will be talking about when heatmaps can be most useful, but before we answer when we should answer why.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Heatmaps show you the things you don\u2019t understand and sometimes miss.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Visualizing the customer journey is something you need to do accurately if you want to convert more users.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>And heatmaps helps you visualize the journey without having to watch hours of recordings of your users navigating your website.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>FigPii\u2019s heatmaps also give you info like\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>How many clicks came from each platform (Desktop vs Mobile)?<\/li>\r\n<li>How many clicks did each element get on your website?<\/li>\r\n<li>How far did people scroll down per platform (Desktop vs Mobile)?<\/li>\r\n<li>How many views did the page get?<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Answers to the above questions are crucial when doing conversion optimization on your website.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Take for example, the first point (How many clicks came from each platform (Desktop vs Mobile), if you notice that mobile visitors are not clicking on your CTAs, they are just scrolling past them. Then you\u2019d know that there is an issue. Heatmaps can help figure out these conversion traps without breaking a sweat.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>When you\u2019re trying to figure out if your content is engaging enough\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Do you ever wonder what works better? Long-form content or short-form?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>I\u2019ll tell you now, whatever answer Google ends up giving you it isn\u2019t it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Because what works on someone else\u2019s website doesn\u2019t not necessarily mean that it will work on yours.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>So copying what works for other brands isn\u2019t a solution and it can even backfire.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>I recommend launching a scrolling and seeing for yourself which type of content works for you.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>If you feel like you\u2019re ever in doubt, and you don\u2019t know the content format to use, just launch a heatmap and get the answers from your users directly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>If you\u2019re trying to figure out messages\/elements that resonate with different traffic sources.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Your traffic is as diverse as a tropical forest, and there isn\u2019t a one-size-fit-all when it comes to messages directed at your customers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>And delivering the right message to the right audience can be crucial.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Like if you\u2019re running a PPC campaign and you have a heatmap running on your website you can easily tell which message \u2013 or elements like graphics and designs \u2013 work the best for visitors coming through that channel.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>People who come from a Google Ad that promotes running shoes might not be interested in knowing more about your high heels.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Figure out the best messaging placement on the site.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Having the right messaging is half problem solved.
