Looking for a comprehensive A/B Testing tool?

AB testing or split testing is a bit of our specialty here at FigPii, so we like to think that we know a thing or two about the best tools in the market.

The best testing tools are the ones that don’t affect your page loading speed.

We’ve compiled a list of our favorite top 10 AB testing tools that are used by trusted CRO experts around the world.

To get onto this list, a tool doesn’t have to affect the page loading speed. We’re looking at other factors as well – like price, usability, customizability, etc – but if it slows down a site, we’re not interested.

Before we dive into the list, here’s a brief explanation of what an AB testing tool is:

Table of Contents

What Is An AB Testing Tool

A/B testing is a platform that helps you test two or more design versions of a web page or email so as to determine which version performs better in terms of conversions. The ultimate goal of an A/B test is to build on the learnings from previous experiments and use those insights to improve the pages being tested.

In the context of A/B testing, optimizers refer to the original design of a page as the control, whereas new designs of the page are usually referred to as the “variations”, “challengers” or “recipes.”

The whole process of A/B testing is commonly known as a “test” or an “ experiment.”

The meaning of “conversion” varies from one site to another or from one web page to the other. A visitor placing an order can be regarded as a conversion in an e-commerce site. A visitor subscribing to the service can be interpreted as a conversion in a SaaS website. A visitor signing up for a newsletter or filling out a contact form can be considered as conversion on a lead generation website.

The percentage of people that complete your desired action is your conversion rate.

According to our State of AB testing report, 71% of online companies run two or more A/B tests every month. For most CRO Agencies, A/B testing is considered as a decision-making or idea validation tool used to compare an idea against reality. Simply put, split-testing gives empirical validation to your design decisions.

The potential benefits of using A/B testing tool are:

  • Improved content.
  • Higher page engagement.
  • Reduced risks.
  • Enforces data-backed decision making.
  • Higher conversion rates.
  • Ease of analysis.
  • Reduced bounce rates on pages.

Using an A/B testing tool to experiment and find an ideal combination for your customers not only provides them with positive experiences, but it also breeds trust and confidence in your brand and company.

How do A/B testing tools work?

At the guts of every A/B testing tool is a snippet of code that decides which variation of a particular web page each visitor will view. In its most simple form, half see the “version A” and half see the “version B”.

The code can either be placed server-side or client-side, but the majority is done client-side via Javascript using a testing tool.

Both perform exactly the same: some visitors see version A, the others see version B. Here’s what the process looks like:

  1. You add a snippet of Javascript code (in your website header like Google Analytics) for the platform you are running.
  2. You specify the URL that you will be running the A/B test on. This will tell the tool where to cookie the visitors who are being opted into your experiment.
  3. Once you’ve entered the URL, you build out the experiment variation. This is where you would add/remove/move elements from your original design (control).
  4. After you’ve created the variant, you can then specify the goals you want to measure. What metrics will tell you whether your new variant was a success?
  5. Next, when you begin the campaign, the tool will begin diverting traffic to variant B (or others if you’ve decided to run a multivariate test).
  6. Depending on the variant the visitor is opted into, the web page code is altered by the testing tool’s Javascript code before it is rendered in the visitor’s browser.
  7. Finally, the testing tool’s cookie tracks which variant the visitor was opted into and whether they take specific actions to be counted against the test goal.
  8. From this point on, you then need to wait for your test to reach enough results to declare an objective winning variant.

The ultimate goal behind these A/B tests is to run multiple subsequent tests built on the learnings from the previous experiment and use those insights to make incremental improvements in the pages being tested.

Whereas user testing measures how easily a user can achieve their own goals (find a product, select a color, check out and arrange shipping, etc.), A/B testing focuses on getting visitors to take actions you want them to take.

That’s a significant difference.

They are both useful for conversion rate optimization, but it’s important not to mistake one for the other. The effectiveness of your testing will hinge on your wise use of strategy.
